Artis Gallery congratulates John edgar in receiving the O.N.Z.M. in the 2009 New Years Honours. Auckland sculptor John Edgar has been exhibiting his work since 1979 both in New Zealand and Australia. Edgar has been included in many curated exhibitions, which have toured nation-wide, and is represented in several public and private collections in New Zealand, Australia and the United States.
Principally working in stone, and sometimes including elements such as glass and metal, his practice encompasses many different scales, from working with jade to create small and beautifully crafted pendants through to large sculptural pieces using stones such as granite, basalt and marble. In 2000 he was commissioned to design the McLeod’s Crossing Bridge that now crosses the Oratia Stream (connecting Falls Park to the West Wave Aquatic Centre in Henderson) and in 2004 he completed a work for the Auckland Domain entitled Transformer. Works by John Edgar will be on display in Artis Gallery’s Summer Exhibition throughout January and February 2009.
